It was then that I discovered my own voice-that hard to define style unique to each author-was exactly what I'd been looking for. I found some that came close (Kristin Cashore, Shannon Hale, and Jesscia Day George), but it seemed most revolved around fairy-tales. I searched for a novel that was more accessible to the average reader. I can say, however, that once I discovered the genre, my secret desire to become a writer transformed into a drive I couldn't ignore.Īnd yet, much as I enjoyed devouring novels by the fantasy greats, I felt there was something missing. Alas, I didn't even know high fantasy existed until I reached my early twenties. I wish I could say I grew up on novels by the likes of Robin McKinley, Mercedes Lackey, or Patricia A.
